President Commissioner Randy Guy opened the March 3 meeting by reading and presenting a string of proclamations recognizing community observances for March.
The board proclaimed March 2026 as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, with county staff and advocates emphasizing public awareness and partnerships that support individuals with developmental disabilities. "Let us come together to honor the inherent dignity and worth of every individual," a proclamation read.
Commissioners also declared March as Women's History Month and outlined a county recognition process. Melissa Rodriguez of the Commission for Women noted the group will shift its annual recognition from a single brunch to a social-media profile series and called for nominations by the coming Friday.
The Department of Aging and Human Services used the senior nutrition proclamation to highlight program scale: in fiscal year 2025 the county provided 54,173 home-delivered meals to 375 individuals and 26,400 congregate meals to 1,199 participants. "It's not just about the nutrition," Laurie Jennings Harris, director of Aging and Human Services, said, citing social contact and volunteer drivers as central to the program.
The board also marked National Social Work Month. Jennifer Neff, deputy director for social services, thanked county social workers and community partners and described cross-sector collaboration with schools, health-care providers and nonprofits.
The ceremonial proclamations concluded with a group photo and brief comments from program staff and volunteers. The proclamations do not enact policy changes; they serve as official recognition and a call to community engagement and outreach.
