The Jasper City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to approve a set of routine city actions, including an event permit for a charity run, contracts for sports officials and tree removal, a one-year fuel contract renewal and a waiver of the Jasper Housing Authority's permit fee.
Kelli, who presented the event permit application, asked the council to approve the city police department's request to hold the second annual Hometown Heroes 5K and 1-mile fun run on Saturday, April 18, at Gamble Park, with setup at 7 a.m. and the event running 9 a.m. to noon. "This is a fundraising event that plans to help a different organization every year," Kelli said; police, fire and street departments had reviewed and approved the route and logistics. The council moved, seconded and approved the permit.
City staff recommended awarding sporting-officials contracts for basketball, baseball and softball to Walker County's sports officials and a volleyball contract to Smith Lake Volleyball Association; they also recommended Newman Tree Service for the tree-removal contract as the lowest responsible bidder. Jessica said the contract awards followed study and evaluation of bids; the council approved the recommendations by voice vote.
The council also authorized staff to solicit bids for four services — nonalcoholic beverage concession rights for the Parks & Recreation department and ground maintenance at North Jasper Park, New Prospect Cemetery and Gay Reed Cemetery — and voted to renew the fuel delivery contract for the sanitation and street departments with Petroleum Traders for one year under the same terms and pricing.
On item 11a, Adam Bolton asked the council to waive a permit fee for a new roof requested by the Jasper Housing Authority. "The Housing Authority has asked for us to waive a fee for a new roof on the building," Bolton said. Council members moved, seconded and approved waiving the fee; Bolton noted the council has traditionally waived this fee but presents it formally for action.
All recorded approvals during the meeting were taken by voice and passed unanimously. There were no roll-call tallies with individual member names recorded in the transcript for these votes.
The meeting also included introductions and updates on several items that will return to council for further action, including a budget amendment introduction for body-scanner maintenance and court computers.
