At its regular meeting, the Pocatello-Chubbuck School District No. 25 board approved several formal actions including a Head Start change in scope, delegation of summer hiring authority to the superintendent, multiple bid awards for next school year and authorization to hold a surplus property auction.
Head Start: The board approved a request to reduce federally funded Head Start enrollment from 169 to 156 learners beginning July 1. Speaker 9 summarized the proposal, saying the change reduces the staff-to-child ratio and that the program leaders "indicated this proposal will not lead to any reductions in staff, and it also will not reduce the number of classrooms," language read into the record by the presenter. Trustee (speaker 8) moved approval and the motion passed after an 'Aye' vote; no opposition was recorded in the transcript.
Delegate hiring authority: The board voted to delegate authority to the superintendent to hire over the summer months so the district could continue recruitment and placement while school is out. Brenda Miner (speaker 19) briefed the board on staffing: of 19 elementary openings the district had hired seven and only four remained open; middle-school vacancies were largely filled and high-school needs were down from earlier concerns. The motion to delegate authority passed, although one trustee (speaker 11, who had earlier spoken as Jody Kelly) voiced "No" when asked if there were any opposed.
Bid awards and surplus auction: District staff summarized multiple as-needed bid packages for food, custodial supplies, bread, milk and other items and recommended awards (example: Franz Bakery for bread; Bridal Gold Dairy for milk) to support the 2024–25 school year; trustees moved and approved the awards. The board also authorized a surplus property auction to run July 13–24 using Prime Time Auction services; staff said proceeds would be reported to the board in August.
What's next: The Head Start change takes effect July 1 for the coming program year, hiring decisions under the delegated authority will proceed through summer with reporting back to the board, and auction proceeds will be posted at the August meeting.
