Senate confirms multiple statewide appointments, including DOC director

The South Carolina Senate on March 2 confirmed a package of statewide appointments and reappointments, including the director of the Department of Corrections.

The Senate reported favorably and then confirmed Joel Anderson of Columbia as director of the Department of Corrections. The clerk reported a roll-call tally of 40–2 and the presiding officer declared the individual confirmed.

The chamber also processed a run of other appointments and reappointments across state boards and commissions. Several were confirmed by previous unanimous consent (recorded as 41–0 where a roll call was required). The clerk read names for reappointments to bodies including the Department of Transportation Commission, the State Board of Pharmacy, the Board of Nursing, and multiple statewide commissions; most were approved without recorded opposition.

Senators used unanimous consent in several cases to apply prior roll-call results to subsequent confirmations. The Senate noted it will allow members to notify the desk if they wished to change a previously recorded vote. No substantive debate accompanied most confirmations; where members asked to be heard, the body accommodated brief remarks and then proceeded to the roll.
