The Middlebury School Board on March 3 recognized Northridge High School senior John Stevens as the district’s 2026 Lilly Endowment Community Scholar.
Superintendent Dr. Snyder introduced Stevens and described the award: the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship provides four years of full tuition and fees and a stipend for books and equipment at any accredited college or university in Indiana. "This prestigious scholarship recognizes his exceptional academic performance, leadership, community involvement, and character," Dr. Snyder said.
Stevens read his scholarship essay to the board, recounting a visit to Saigon and reflecting on his family’s experience and his parents’ influence. "I realized that I'm not a self made man," he read, emphasizing the role of family and community in shaping his path.
Board members congratulated Stevens and applauded his accomplishments. Dr. Snyder and other administrators noted his participation in a long list of extracurricular activities, including robotics, Science Olympiad, tennis and student council.
The recognition was ceremonial; no formal board action was recorded beyond the presentation and congratulations.
