Council marks Covenant School anniversary, members call for action on gun violence

On the first anniversary of the Covenant School shooting, the Metropolitan Council adopted RS2024-324 to honor victims and recognize the actions of school staff, first responders and the broader community.

Sponsor Councilmember Sandy Ewing recounted the names of those killed and framed the resolution as both a memorial and a call to action: "I'm tired of thoughts and prayers," she said, pressing elected officials at all levels to address gun violence and to fund mental‑health supports rather than rely solely on increased police presence in schools.

Multiple council members spoke in support and cosponsored the resolution under rule 12.3; the Covenant community indicated it would hold a private ceremony and the council offered prayers and solidarity. The resolution passed unanimously by voice and subsequent roll call measures where invoked.
