A Georgia House committee on Monday heard a resolution asserting that participation in the arts can help promote mental‑health recovery and address trauma.
Judge Matthew Saif presented the nonbinding House resolution to the committee, telling members that "participation in the arts is globally recognized as a significant resource for promoting mental health and well‑being." Saif said peer‑reviewed studies support the claim and noted that the United States Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Defense have integrated art therapy into programs for veterans with post‑traumatic stress disorder.
The resolution, as read by Saif, states that the Georgia House of Representatives believes the arts play a key role in supporting recovery from trauma and addressing mental‑health concerns in the state. Saif told the committee that the resolution rests in part on third‑party, peer‑reviewed evidence gathered over the previous summer.
Committee members asked no follow‑up questions after the presentation and the chair moved on to other items on the calendar. The committee did not record a vote on the resolution during the session.
