Talas, speaking on behalf of the Porterville Chamber of Commerce, told the Downtown Committee the chamber’s board has decided the organization will step away from organizing the Porterville Children’s Christmas Parade.
"The chamber will step away from organizing the parade," Talas said, adding the board concluded the scale and operational demands no longer align with the chamber’s mission and capacity after a review following the 2025 event.
Talas said the decision was not sudden: the board had set a contingency after the 2024 parade and moved forward with the 2025 parade only if "meaningful changes and adequate support" were in place. He said those conditions were not met and the board confirmed in January that the chamber would withdraw as organizer.
Committee members asked whether the new Rotary group that had been co-hosting would assume responsibilities. One committee member said the Rotary is "withdrawing their hosting duties" as well; Talas replied Rotary would likely remain involved as volunteers but does not have the capacity to lead the event.
Chair expressed disappointment at the chamber’s decision, saying the chamber had sent a letter last year asking for more funding and that money "got in the way of this tradition." The Chair instructed the Downtown Committee to meet with Rotary and other partners, including faith groups, to explore how to reinvent the parade for next year.
The committee did not adopt a formal plan at the meeting; members said the Downtown Committee will discuss alternatives and report back in future sessions.
