Hall County board authorizes chair to send information request on GI East bypass

The Hall County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to authorize the board chair to send a request-for-information to the state about the Grand Island (GI) East bypass project.

A commissioner explained the city-prepared draft is intended to request the current status and design effort rather than to serve as a formal letter of support. "This letter... is not a letter of support. It's a request for information," a commissioner said during discussion.

Commissioners said an eventual letter of support would depend on the route design and possible right-of-way preservation. One commissioner noted that, if the design is narrowed, the county could later consider a right-of-way preservation corridor or formal support.

The motion to approve sending the letter and to have the board chair sign it passed by a 6-0 vote.

The board also discussed the importance of providing extra copies of materials to the news media and of posting agendas in advance so the public and press can follow developments on projects such as the bypass.
