The Buchanan County Public Schools meeting opened with multiple student recognitions and local program celebrations, followed by a presentation on the state-endorsed All in Virginia tutoring initiative.
Board members and district staff called forward band and music students (individual chairs and honors were named), Virginia School Board Association art winners across elementary, middle and high divisions (first-place winners to advance to regional judging were named), and multiple grade-level science/art winners. Several students introduced themselves and described projects or reflected on positive experiences at their schools.
Division superintendent Sherry Fletcher presented the All in Virginia tutoring plan, which the board said has been endorsed by Governor Youngkin and the Virginia Department of Education. Fletcher described the program as a high-intensity tutoring initiative for K–8 in reading and math that emphasizes learning acceleration, small-group instruction (recommended student-to-teacher ratio cited as 10:1), high dosage (five days per week), and use of a division playbook and digital progress monitoring tools. Fletcher provided a contact number for parents and said the division will implement daily tutoring for grades 3–8 and integrate high-dosage tutoring into the school day where feasible.
Board members congratulated students and teachers for recognition in the WISE Financial credential rankings and acknowledged local program successes. The meeting then moved to routine business and approvals (see companion article for votes and motions).
