Director Markham presented a new federal grant to the Budget Committee: a $90,000 "7 54 literacy materials implementation support grant" intended to fund districtwide training and supplemental book sets for grades 6–12.
"This is a new federal grant," Markham said, and the committee approved sending the item forward contingent on school-board approval and the school system's subsequent action. Markham noted that the item will also be presented to the school board later in the month and does not require full-county commission approval, but asked the committee to approve it contingent on the school board's concurrence.
Why it matters: The funds are targeted to literacy materials and training across the district and will support classroom resources for grades 6–12. The county's action in committee helps ensure required administrative steps are taken so the school board can accept and implement the grant.
Other school-related reallocations: Markham also outlined smaller reallocations in federal school funds (a $3,566.35 Carl Perkins allocation and a $4,464.07 Access for All Learning Network reallocation) intended to shift budgeted dollars into instructional supplies and materials; the committee approved these reallocations contingent on school-board approval.
Next steps: The school board will consider the grant and the reallocations at its meeting later in the month; county staff will track any necessary reporting or reallocation paperwork.
