The Spencer County Schools board voted unanimously on May 28 to accept a low construction bid and to authorize contract documentation for a partial renovation of the Spencer County Early Learning Center.
Justin, a district construction representative, reported that four general contractors submitted bids and that the low bid — Churchill McGee — came in at $1,262,000, roughly 27% below the district’s prior BG-3 estimate of about $1,738,000. Staff noted that some work will be self-performed by district maintenance staff, which affects the construction-cost breakout in the BG-1 reconciliation.
Superintendent and staff asked the board to (1) accept Churchill McGee’s bid, (2) approve the post-bid BG-1 to reconcile actual costs, and (3) authorize the superintendent to gather the necessary signatures to finalize contracts. Board members asked clarifying questions about alternates and owner-preferred lighting controls; staff confirmed that the owner-preferred lighting control alternate was included at no cost change.
A motion to approve the superintendent’s recommendations was made, seconded and approved unanimously. Staff indicated they would issue a notice to proceed and asked the contractor to mobilize to take advantage of summer work while schools are out.
The board also approved the BG-1 and signature-gathering authorization unanimously.
No dollar adjustments or amendments to the bid award were recorded in public discussion beyond the BG-1 reconciliation details presented.
