Haywood County proclaims March Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month; Arc of Haywood County honored for 50 years

Haywood County commissioners on March 2 unanimously approved a proclamation recognizing March as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month and celebrated the Arc of Haywood County's 50th anniversary.

Todd Barbee, executive director of the Arc of Haywood County, described the organization's work supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and introduced two clients who spoke at the meeting. "For 50 years, the Arc has worked alongside individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families to help ensure that everyone in the community has the opportunity to live with dignity, independence, and belonging," Barbee said as he read the proclamation.

Two Arc clients, Mel and Reagan, addressed the board: Mel said he has lived in a group home for two years and enjoys time with friends and volunteer activities at local dog shelters; Reagan said she has worked at Burger King in Clyde for six years and described enjoying cooking and swimming. Commissioners praised the clients for their remarks.

The proclamation text noted the Arc was founded in 1976, has served approximately 320 residents in its four group homes since founding, serves roughly 100 individuals annually today through residential and support programs, and employs 47 local staff. The board approved the proclamation by voice vote.

The board also acknowledged the clients and invited them forward for a photograph following the meeting.
