The California State Assembly paused on Jan. 20, 2026, to adjourn in memory of two community leaders. Assemblymember Ortega rose to honor Steven Cassidy, recalling Cassidy's service as a mayor, his work on school boards and efforts to preserve hospital access and expand local institutions. Ortega asked the Assembly to adjourn in Cassidy's memory.
Ortega described Cassidy's efforts to modernize classrooms, enrich academic and arts programs, and champion public‑private partnerships that expanded broadband and saved local hospitals. "Because of his steadfast advocacy, classrooms were modernized, academic and arts programs were enriched, campuses were made safer and more accessible," Ortega said.
Assemblymember Wilson then offered remarks honoring Joseph R. Martinez, describing Martinez as a longstanding advocate for Solano County agriculture who led Martinez Ranches and supported local family farms. Wilson noted Martinez's community leadership, educational background, and that family members attended the session.
Majority Leader added personal recollections of Martinez's early leadership, mentorship and efforts to sustain rural health care. Members asked the clerk to print the names for the journal and the Assembly observed moments of silence for each honoree before resuming procedural business.
