The Board of Education for Colorado Springs School District No. 11 unanimously approved its meeting agenda and voted to go into an executive session Wednesday evening to receive legal advice related to the Colorado Springs Education Association and employee handbooks and contracts, the board’s presiding chair said.
Dr. Haffrey moved “I move that the Board of Education adopts the agenda as presented,” and the chair seconded the motion. Miss Olson conducted the roll call; each director recorded an "Aye," and the chair announced the agenda was adopted as presented.
The board then discussed moving into an executive session. A director moved, “I move that the board of education convenes into executive session to discuss legal advice per Colorado Revised Statutes §24-6-402(4)(b), particular matter, Colorado Springs Education Association, educational support professionals, and educational professionals, employee group handbooks, and contracts.” The motion was seconded, the board took a roll call vote with all directors voting "Aye," and the chair declared the motion carried.
The chair told attendees the executive session would last approximately 120 minutes and said the board would return to the boardroom if necessary; if not, it would adjourn from executive session.
The actions taken at the meeting were procedural: adoption of the meeting agenda and a vote to convene an executive session to receive legal counsel on the specified labor-related matters. No public discussion of the substantive issues in the handbooks or contract terms occurred on the public record before the board moved into executive session.
The meeting began at 6:20 p.m.; the board observed a moment of silence and completed roll call before taking the votes. The board did not take additional public actions before adjourning to executive session.
