The Vineland Board of Education voted to suspend board policy and approve a last-minute field trip request from the district’s Air Force Junior ROTC unit, authorizing travel to the U.S. Coast Guard base in Cape May on April 25.
Cadet Airman First Class Conrad and Cadet Senior Master Sergeant Shalitza De La Rosa told the board the invitation came on short notice and that the unit had limited time to meet the district’s five‑week submission window. “This opportunity ... could be maybe once in a lifetime experience,” Conrad said in public comment, asking the board to reconsider deadlines for military-affiliated activities.
Superintendent Yano and central office staff explained the district’s five‑week master calendar for field‑trip submissions and cited transportation staffing constraints that make late trips difficult to schedule. Yano said administration did not yet have the specific Cape May trip form and would collect details including date, number of students and transportation needs before finalizing arrangements.
Board member Mister Medeo moved to suspend the policy and approve the trip, noting the district could pay for a private bus if necessary; other board members expressed concern about setting a precedent for late approvals. Mister Holmes said the board was sympathetic but cautioned that exceptions should remain rare. After debate, the board carried the motion to suspend policy and approve the trip.
The board’s action authorized staff to arrange transportation and finalize trip specifics; administration committed to obtaining the missing information and confirming logistics. The board recorded the motion as carried and directed the board secretary and central administration to follow up with details.
What happens next: administration will submit the trip details gathered to the board office, arrange transportation (including private charter if needed), and proceed with the approved trip authorization.
