Saranac Lake board commends high-school sophomore who assisted at roadside accident

The Saranac Lake Central School District Board of Education on March 13 adopted a resolution commending Tanner Barton, a Saranac Lake High School sophomore, for providing assistance to Anna Candeli following a roadside accident on Feb. 16, 2024.

The board read and adopted Resolution 0852023 recognizing Barton’s quick action and selfless assistance. At the meeting Anna Candeli (self-identified, speaker 9) thanked Barton directly and used the opportunity to promote an American Red Cross winter-safety program and an event she said would take place in Saranac Lake. Kathy Barnavist (speaker 7), who identified herself as vice president for marketing and enrollment management at Paul Smith College, said the college would like to offer Barton a $1,000 scholarship when he enrolls, renewable while he remains a student.

Board members praised Barton’s actions and applauded both the student and first responders. The district noted a clerical error in the resolution’s date and said it would correct the date for the formal record.

What happens next: The resolution was adopted and the district will correct the date on the document for the permanent record; no additional board action was recorded.
