Mr. Brown, presenting on behalf of district staff, told the Grandview Heights Schools Board of Education that the district is continuing work to embed social‑emotional learning (SEL) into universal classroom practice.
He framed the approach within MTSS (multi‑tiered system of supports), describing Tier 1 as universal practices for all students and Tier 2/3 as targeted and individualized supports. "Tier 1 supports ... the trick really is how do we embed this into the instruction so that it's seamless?" Mr. Brown said, offering examples such as greeting students at the door, brief "check‑in/check‑out" conversations with a trusted adult, calming corners and multiple ways for students to demonstrate learning.
Mr. Brown also described four "attributes for success" developed by a committee of teachers, administrators and some board members: integrity, curious innovator, intentional communicator and resilient. He said the group created developmental skill progressions for K–2, 3–5, 6–8 and 9–12 so that the attributes are student‑facing and build over time. "It's a skill progression rather than a rubric," he said.
The presenter said the district will compile teacher practices, research and resources into a live "Tier 1 SEL toolbox" for easy teacher access and plan a soft rollout next school year. Board members asked whether the attributes would replace report‑card language; Mr. Brown said the intent is for the attributes to replace current language in reports if adopted.
Board members praised teacher engagement in the process and described the work as an example of strategic planning informing classroom practice. The board did not take a final vote; Mr. Brown said next steps include finalizing rollout logistics and sharing materials with teachers and families.
