The Paynesville Public School District board agreed to target the Aug. 13 election to place a technology levy renewal before voters, saying running on an existing election date would reduce administrative burden.
"We'll continue to move forward with the target of August 13 for a vote," the Chair said, adding that the board would need to issue a resolution by May 31 to meet the city’s election schedule. Board members discussed the tradeoffs of an August election versus waiting until November.
Why it matters: district leaders said the levy underpins classroom technology and supports learning that is now integrated across instruction, and they framed the item as a renewal rather than a new ask. Several board members said outreach must focus on residents who are not parents or staff: one member noted survey responses suggested nonstaff voters sometimes hold different perceptions from those in the school system.
What the board heard: members reviewed recent survey results and turnout metrics. One board member said some survey items showed only a 17% response rate and emphasized the need for broader engagement; another urged the board to "educate that 25% of nonparents" to build the necessary informed support. The Chair said administrators and communications staff would work with consultant Jacob Berkham to draft publications and targeted messaging to reach nonparents, nonstaff and the general public.
Next steps: the administration and principals will prepare materials for a public-facing information campaign and conduct targeted outreach over the summer if the board adopts the resolution by May 31. The board discussed the option of moving the question to November if logistics or strategic considerations change, but did not finalize that alternative during this meeting.
