Teachers, union representatives and parents used the board’s public-comment period to press Grand Rapids Public Schools to act quickly on a salary proposal and to address widespread staffing gaps that commenters said are harming student services.
GRA vice president Jenny Ming said the union submitted a revised salary proposal and urged the district to respond before spring break so the district remains competitive with neighboring systems. “Hemos hecho nuestro nuestro análisis financiero y sabemos que esto es razonable,” Ming said, asking the district for a timely response.
Nut graf: Multiple speakers said pay and staffing are linked to student outcomes and that the district risks losing teachers to neighboring districts if it does not move faster on compensation and recruitment.
What commenters reported
Several teachers and staff described large numbers of vacancies and the consequences in classrooms. One teacher stated that the district has “139 vacantes,” and said many students are not receiving services required by IEPs. Public commenters argued the district should prioritize salary competitiveness and retention measures, including planning time and stronger communication with staff and families.
A teacher who identified herself as María Romano said the special-education department is operating with large gaps that result in students missing legally required services; she urged the administration to accept the union’s proposal. GRA leaders said their financial modeling shows the proposal is feasible and urged the board and administration to provide a rapid answer.
Board and administrative response
Board members acknowledged the concerns and said they are listening; administration said it is reviewing proposals and will continue working through committees and human-resources channels to determine next steps. The superintendent and board emphasized competing priorities and the need to balance classroom resources with salary and staffing commitments.
Next steps
The union requested a response by spring break; board members said the district will continue internal discussions and bring formal proposals through committee while continuing outreach to employees and families.
