Haslett board gives first reading to several policy updates, including proposed GPS audio restriction

At the meeting the board completed a first reading of multiple proposed policy updates and technical corrections.

Vice President Collins read the package to the board, which included changes to superintendent-evaluation language (policy 12-40), a proposed repeal of policy 2410 to reflect a rescinded state law, language cleanups to reproductive-health policy 2414 while preserving parental-notification and opt-out provisions, and housekeeping edits to policy 2418. There were purchasing and prevailing-wage cross-references added to policies 6320 and 6321; the board also reviewed a new requirement in policy 6350 that school districts designate a prevailing-wage coordinator. Policy 6520 was updated to reflect recent changes in state law related to payroll deductions and collective bargaining.

Among the new proposals was policy 5210 addressing GPS tracking devices with audio capability: the draft would require audio functions to be turned off during the school day. Collins described the GPS provision as a privacy precaution tied to recent legal guidance and school practice.

All items were made available for public review at the central office and were read as a first reading; the board scheduled a second reading for the next meeting.

The first-reading presentation did not include formal board votes on the policies themselves; second reading and any adoption would occur at a later meeting.
