Katie Tallman, WIC coordinator with the Onslow County Health Department, discussed WIC services during National Nutrition Month, explaining who is eligible and how families can access benefits and nutrition counseling.
"So the WIC program stands for women, infants, and children," Tallman said, noting the program serves income-eligible pregnant women (and up to 12 months postpartum while breastfeeding), infants and children under 5. She said WIC nutritionists help families choose affordable, nutrient-rich options and offer ingredient-swap tips (for example, whole-wheat pasta in macaroni and cheese) and strategies to encourage toddlers to try new foods.
Tallman described access points: two on-base locations for families with base access (one next to Terrace Housing) and the main health department WIC window on the main floor, where families may walk in, make appointments or be worked in; a referral form is available on the Onslow County health department WIC webpage. She encouraged parents to call the department or contact their school nurse with questions.
The segment provided program information and did not announce funding changes or eligibility-rule changes.
