District administrators outlined the Sturgeon Bay Summer Learning Academy and program logistics at the March 20 school board meeting.
The program will run June 17–July 18, Monday through Thursday from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., and is open to students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Staff said the session structure splits into two multi-week sessions (the first concluding before the week of July 4, the second running July 8–18) to allow students to take part in different offerings during each session.
Administrators described partnerships intended to support families: coordination with the Door County YMCA and the Boys and Girls Club for drop-off locations, optional transportation from central pick-up points on the East and West sides of Sturgeon Bay, and discussions with the YMCA to arrange summer meals (breakfast plus a next-day option for students in some cases). Staff emphasized the program includes both academic and enrichment options designed to be engaging for different ages and ability levels.
The board and building principals previewed course options including STEM and arts classes (examples mentioned: edible chemistry, a music recording studio, community garden, and sport-specific opportunities). Registration opened recently for district students, and staff said registration opens to non–Sturgeon Bay families on April 8.
Administrators noted some athletic/skill opportunities and optional early-morning lifting for student-athletes; transportation is not full door-to-door service but aims to reduce barriers for families. Staff said they will clarify scheduling details (morning split sessions and athletic options) in public materials to reduce confusion and to confirm final logistics.
"We'll be hosted at both Sunrise Elementary and on this secondary campus, from June 17 through July 18... Classes would be held Monday through Thursday from 08:30 to 11:30," a staff speaker said during the meeting.
Next steps: Staff will finalize transportation stops and meal arrangements and make registration details available online; they asked families to watch district communications for updates.
