A student presentation led the East Troy Community School District Board of Education to approve installing an "Oak Box" overdose‑aid kit at East Troy High School on March 18.
Savannah Kaleski, a junior at East Troy High School, described the Oak Box—a wall‑mounted metal container stocked with naloxone nasal spray (brand name Narcan), fentanyl test strips, CPR breathing masks and gloves—and explained how HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) would manage the box. Kaleski said Start Healing Now Foundation would provide naloxone and fentanyl testing strips and that the box would be placed near the AED by the main gym.
"Having an Oak Box at East Troy High School could potentially save a life," Kaleski told the board, adding that the high school hosts numerous events outside the school day when bystanders might need immediate access to overdose reversal medication.
Administrators confirmed there is a kit already located at the Town of East Troy Police Department and noted other nearby schools and public venues have similar devices. Board members moved and seconded a motion to approve installation; the board approved the motion by voice vote.
Policy alignment: Administration also presented a revised medication‑administration policy to address use and stocking of opioid antagonists by staff; the board approved the policy update in the same meeting to ensure the district’s rules reflect the presence of Oak Boxes.
What’s next: HOSA students will manage stocking and Start Healing Now will provide initial supplies and training; administration said they will follow up with placement logistics and any necessary staff training.
