The Pawtucket School Committee used its Dec. 5 meeting to recognize a Slater Middle School student’s academic achievement, introduce a new master plan process and approve several district agreements.
State Representative Leonela Felix presented a citation recognizing Saeed Abdallah for a perfect 54/54 score on a math assessment. The committee and district presented a certificate and a $100 gift card to the student.
Dr. Andre introduced Manuel Cordero of a master-planning firm, who outlined the district’s forthcoming master plan. Cordero said the plan will include school-level demographic updates, facility-condition reviews and alignment with educational programming, and that the district will aim to submit a Stage 1 Necessity of School Construction application by Feb. 15.
On business items, the committee approved the district’s virtual instructional plan, which permits up to five virtual instructional days and gives the superintendent authority to elect virtual days for closures, and approved a memorandum of understanding with the Boys & Girls Club funded through a Learn & March grant to expand after-school programming aimed at reducing chronic absenteeism. The committee also approved a HASEL Health memorandum of understanding; staff said the telehealth-based counseling services are provided at no cost to the district and serve eligible students roughly ages 8–18.
Votes at a glance (recorded by roll call): the virtual instruction plan passed (unanimous), the Boys & Girls Club MOU was approved (unanimous), and the HASEL Health MOU was approved (unanimous). The committee also ratified the Council 94 Local 13-52 collective bargaining agreement in open session following a unanimous vote in executive session.
Facilities staff installed temporary safety fencing at a handicap space near the Winters drainage ditch after Miss Panolo raised concerns about the risk of someone falling into the ditch; the district will consult the original architect and the owner’s project manager on a permanent fix.
Next steps: Cordero said the master plan work will continue after the Stage 1 submission and staff will return with updates; the committee did not set a specific public timeline for further master-plan engagement at the meeting.
