Committee seeks clearer wording on 'setting' policy and chain-of-command in School Organization policy

The committee reviewed Policy 802, which lays out school organization and the chain of command for reporting and initial contacts. Members flagged wording in the chart as unclear — in particular the phrase "staff relationships exercise responsibility as specifically delegated" — and suggested simplifying to improve readability (for example, deleting "staff relationships" and beginning the phrase with "exercise").

One board member asked for a clearer definition of the board’s role when the policy says the UASD board "sets" policy, asking if "approve" might be a clearer term or if the board actively participates in drafting. Staff noted language already existing in Policy 003 addressing board powers (adopt, modify, repeal) could be incorporated into Policy 802 to clarify authority.

The committee asked staff to draft suggested revisions and bring the item back for the February meeting cycle so the board and incoming superintendent can decide on the preferred wording and levels of participation.
