A sustained discussion at the April 18 meeting focused on whether to renew the McGuffey School District's Pennsylvania School Boards Association (PSBA) membership at the all-access package price (quoted at $13,890.32) or opt for a smaller standard package or a la carte alternatives.
Several board members and at least one public commenter criticized PSBA's public stances and said the association has become more political; speakers suggested exploring a la carte procurement of training and services, or pressing local PSBA representatives for change. Administration and other board members countered that the all-access package includes legal resources, policy maintenance and school-safety supports the district has used and that, in prior analysis, paying piecemeal for equivalent services could be more expensive.
Administration noted examples of direct PSBA support used by the district (legal/safety incident response, access to experts), while critics said the board should communicate views to PSBA leadership and consider alternatives. The motion to approve the renewal was brought forward but not adopted at the meeting because the item requires five affirmative votes and not all board members were present; the district will revisit the item at the next meeting with the full board.
The discussion signaled both fiscal scrutiny and concern about organizational advocacy; several board members asked administration to model a la carte cost comparisons and provide clearer documentation of PSBA services the district uses.
