North Marion board approves midyear appropriations change after $600,000 state funding shortfall

The North Marion School Board voted to approve Resolution 5132024 to amend appropriations after district staff told the board the district’s state school fund allocations came in lower than expected. Board members were told the change reduced expected revenue by nearly $600,000.

District staff said the funding update required adjustments across funds to present a balanced budget. Staff proposed transferring about $300,000 within special revenue accounts — moving funds from instruction to support services — and making a small $2,000 capital-projects adjustment to cover an HVAC invoice. The board moved, seconded and approved the amendment by voice vote.

Board members asked for clarity about account shifts and the documentation behind the transfers. Presenters explained some expense lines were shifted into ESSER and other grants to close out accounts and that the April accounting entries produced month-to-month changes in salary and purchased-services lines. District staff said normal patterns should resume in subsequent months once the accounting shifts are complete.

The board’s action allows district administrators to execute the transfers and continue preparing a balanced budget for the coming fiscal period. The district indicated it will provide updated budget documents and the red/yellow/green performance indicators at the next board meeting.

The board took the vote during its regular May meeting; no roll-call tallies were recorded on the transcript and the motions carried by voice vote.
