The Chagrin Falls Exempted Village Schools Board of Education discussed and moved to accept an Ohio EPA Recycle Grant covering up to $200,000 in matching funds for the district’s planned track replacement.
District staff explained that the grant requires use of recycled rubber and that, for this project, all recycled rubber will be sourced from Ohio vendors. The supplier was described as experienced in supplying recycled rubber for track projects; staff said the supplier has been working with the material since the late 1960s and that certification work was part of the procurement review.
Administrators estimated the construction window to be roughly 30 days (targeted July 1–July 30) and noted a 14-day cure period for any asphalt work before striping and return-to-use. The board discussed whether removed rubber could be recycled for future projects; staff said it was unlikely to be turned back into the same project but that sizing/grade specifications vary by supplier and project.
Board members framed the grant as both a cost-offset for the district (‘‘found money’’) and as having an environmental benefit by redirecting scrap rubber away from landfills. The project was already planned; the grant reduces the district’s net outlay and relieves pressure on the permanent improvement and general funds, staff said.
The board approved the consent agenda that included the grant acceptance and other routine items.
