Superintendent Christine Tona presented a near-year update on the Mahopac Central School District's five-year strategic plan on Oct. 29, reporting progress on universal prekindergarten seats, career pathways, curriculum work and capital projects while flagging upcoming facility decisions.
Tona said the district established a universal prekindergarten program this year with 156 seats and 155 students enrolled so far. She highlighted growth in students earning the state-recognized "seal of civic readiness," which rose from 23 students in 2022–23 to 35 this past year.
On academics and pathways, Tona said the high school added an elective in careers in health and medical sciences and a new allied-health pathway. The district is reviewing course syllabi for financial literacy and exploring a potential International Baccalaureate program "in the initial phases," she said, adding that exploration does not equal adoption.
Tona said the district is conducting a special-education program review, updating curriculum maps and working on a "profile of a graduate" aligned with pending state guidance for profiles of learning at key grade levels. Technology initiatives include a 1-to-1 Chromebook program and exploration of student-facing repair and computer-repair opportunities.
On facilities, Tona said the district is completing most capital-project work and will consider approving Tetra Tech as the architect of record for Phase 4, which would include the Lakeview roof replacement. "We're looking to approve phase 4, Lakeview roof replacement with the balance of the funds," she said. She noted bathroom renovations must satisfy ADA requirements and state review processes, and said the district is developing a multiyear facilities plan and a building-condition survey.
The superintendent also described rebranding work, rollout of updated letterhead and early alumni-network planning; she asked for board questions before turning the meeting over to safety and security staff.
What happens next: The board will consider the Tetra Tech appointment on the agenda (if taken up formally) and expects future updates on facilities priority-setting, the special-education program review, and any decisions about the International Baccalaureate exploration.
