The Salem Central School District board announced results of the May 21 vote and began planning next steps after voters defeated the proposed basic budget. The chair reported Proposition 1 (the basic budget) failed narrowly (266 yes, 188 no). Propositions 2 (bus lease) and 3 (library appropriation) passed.
Superintendent briefed the board on the legal calendar and the tight timeline for publication of required notices. She said the district can present a revised proposition using the district's maximum allowable levy of 2.9 percent and suggested the board authorize staff to run the numbers so the district can meet newspaper and legal-notice deadlines.
Trustees discussed the trade-offs: several said the original 6.9 percent proposal had support in the community, but recognized the supermajority requirement and the risk of returning with the same figure. Multiple trustees said they favored lowering the second proposal to 2.9 percent and directed the administration to prepare the detailed budget options and to convene a special meeting (targeted next week) to adopt the new levy amount and file the required legal notices.
Administrators said they would produce a line-item reconciliation showing which cuts or restorations would result from choosing a 2.9 percent increase versus other options, and that they would prepare materials for public review prior to the special meeting.
The board emphasized outreach to stakeholders, noting some residents said they were surprised by the meeting-time change and requested clearer notice for future votes.
