During the action agenda the board approved a contract award for the Walnut Cove Elementary roof project and took a separate budget amendment to action.
Board discussion had earlier moved the Walnut Cove roof bid to action with direction to include Alternates 2 and 3. At the action meeting Mister Rogers made a motion to approve Allied Roofing’s low bid of $531,862 (to include Alternates 2 and 3); the motion was seconded and the board approved the contract by voice vote.
Capital-outlay discussion earlier in the meeting reviewed district project requests and a recommended capital budget (total requests versus recommended funded projects). Staff discussed replacing three activity buses (focusing on larger, long-trip buses), resurfacing or rebuilding tennis courts at several schools and priority work at King Elementary, including perimeter fencing, remote-access gates and a bathroom reconfiguration to make restrooms ADA accessible. Facilities staff said the King Elementary hall restrooms currently use plywood/dividers or shower-curtain-style separations in some student bathrooms and estimated a full fix to remove curtains and provide compliant stalls—including engineering, grading and possible asphalt work—could cost about $300,000 per building area; staff recommended a facilities tour and further engineering estimates before approving large capital expenditures.
Board members also discussed consolidation-phase projects drawn from a previously designated $1 million and expressed concern about 1970s-era mobile units at Sandy Ridge that may require extensive repairs; members asked staff to include those sites on an upcoming facilities tour and to provide engineer estimates for major work before committing funds.
Separately, the board moved and approved federal fund budget amendment number 2 (administrative DPI allotment adjustments and code transfers) by voice vote, and later voted to enter closed session on a bond-forfeiture matter.
