Cole McMasters, a freshman and Boy Scout working toward Eagle Scout, proposed installing a solar light on the cleat of the main flagpole at East Surry High School and adding modest landscaping so the flag would be properly illuminated at night. McMasters said volunteers would come from his troop and from JROTC cadets at the high school. "This flag has stood the test of time," McMasters told the board, explaining the project will ensure the district meets flag-code lighting requirements.
Board members asked technical questions about whether a solar fixture placed 2–3 feet above ground could illuminate a 30‑foot pole. School staff said they would help verify product specifications and that school administrators support the concept. The board moved and approved the project by voice vote, and trustees invited McMasters to update the board when the work is finished.
The project requires minimal staff coordination and uses volunteer labor; the board signaled support for the memorial/beautification elements and asked staff to confirm any necessary permits or procurement steps before installation.
