District staff presented results of the Teacher Working Conditions survey, which had a 78.66% response rate in Surry County Schools. The survey, administered statewide, provides three main views of results: individual item analysis, an 'agree' analysis, and a three‑year historical trend for items asked previously. The presenter told trustees the district outperformed or matched the state average on many leadership and retention metrics but noted worrying findings on student conduct and classroom disorder.
Board members highlighted that between roughly 30% and 52% of teachers reported disorders in classrooms, hallways and cafeterias on some items, and they urged stronger supports for beginning teachers and targeted professional development in classroom management. Staff recommended that principals and school improvement teams dig into school‑level data, set goals, and return plans in the fall as part of school improvement cycles.
Trustees requested follow up reports at the start of the school year showing action plans principals will use to address high‑priority items from the survey.
