The Arlington Public Schools Board of Education voted to approve building-level budgets and the district-level budget request for the 2024–25 school year during its regular May meeting.
A finance-committee member moved to approve the building-level budgets “as presented,” and the motion was seconded; the chair declared the motion carried after trustees gave roll-call confirmations. Board members later moved and approved the district-level budget request. The board framed the approvals as the committee’s recommendation after line-by-line reviews and adjustments.
Doctor Lewis summarized the budget adjustments, noting that some areas were reduced while others increased to reflect recurring needs. “Overall, about $75,000 for requesting those three areas last year,” Doctor Lewis said while outlining increases for web and cloud-based subscriptions, testing costs and a renewed technology replacement cycle. He also told trustees that maintenance and capital timing allowed the district to defer certain large purchases and realize about a $100,000 reduction in this year’s maintenance-budget request.
Committee members said high school budgets are largely stable with modest increases tied to two new elective classes, while elementary and secondary budgets were refined to balance one-time and recurring needs. Technology costs are rising partly because the district will restart a device-replacement cycle for staff and students after multi-year federal and E-rate purchases.
Board members agreed the budget approvals set the district’s spending authority while leaving some flexibility for summer projects and contract negotiations. The board did not modify the approved motions at the meeting; staff will finalize submission of the district request to state authorities.
Outcome: building-level budgets and the district-level budget request for 2024–25 were approved by the board.
