At the March 18 Huron Valley Schools board meeting, alumni testimonials and staff recognitions focused attention on Harbor High, the district’s alternative high-school program.
"I would not have completed high school if Harbor was not an option," said Samantha Nichols, a Harbor graduate, describing how the smaller, individualized setting helped her stay on track. Bailey Duvall, another Harbor alum, said the school’s individualized education plans and close teacher supports allowed her to graduate early and continue to college.
Superintendent Dr. Salah and Miss Roffler invited the students and their families forward to present a certificate honoring Bryce Cleeseby of Lakeland, who the district said was a National Merit semifinalist and active in NHS and community service programs. Bryce was joined by his principal and board member Amy Grzymkowski for recognition.
The board also heard from the Huron Valley Education Association about district Teacher of the Year awards. The district’s honorees included Michelle Bickel (Elementary Teacher of the Year, Johnson Elementary), Anthony Mango (Middle School Teacher of the Year, White Lake), and Jennifer Grubb (High School Teacher of the Year, special education at Milford). A representative described each honoree’s contributions to mentoring and student support.
Board members praised the students and educators for their work; the meeting concluded with a group photo and thanks to the honorees.
