The North Harrison Community School Corporation board voted 5-0 to approve a resolution authorizing litigation against social media companies and to retain Waxnet and Cartmel LLP to pursue claims seeking compensation for harms the district says its students and schools have suffered.
Mr. Breed, a district staff member who spoke in support of the resolution, told the board the legal team had worked on the Jewel settlement and said the district believes features on social platforms have been designed in ways that foster addiction among young users. “A lot of these social media companies purposely researched and designed features within their platforms and cause teenage addiction,” Mr. Breed said, adding that schools have spent extra time and resources on mental-health supports, disciplinary issues, vandalism and other impacts the district attributes to social media. He also said joining the litigation would not create a financial obligation for the district.
Board president Eric Stroud moved the resolution and called for discussion before the vote. No board member voiced opposition; the chair declared the motion passed.
Why it matters: The action places the district alongside other school systems that have authorized or joined litigation against social platforms seeking compensation for alleged harms. The resolution directs lawyers to pursue appropriate parties; it does not itself create a budget obligation, according to district remarks at the meeting.
What’s next: The board approved retention of outside counsel and empowered that legal team to proceed as appropriate. The resolution does not spell out specific claims or timelines; further legal filings and associated district reporting would be separate actions tracked by the administration.
