Board recommends DDA liquor license for Happy's Tacos at 413 East Lake Street

The Downtown Management Board voted to recommend that City Council issue a DDA liquor license for Happy's Tacos at 413 East Lake Street. A board member moved the recommendation, another seconded, and the board carried the motion by voice vote.

Applicants for Happy's Tacos answered board questions about operations and experience. One applicant said they currently operate from a commissary in Boyne City and seasonally run a food truck; they also noted experience operating a taproom in their commissary location. The board clarified license availability under the updated ordinance and asked whether a previously recommended application for a nearby location had advanced to council; staff said an earlier recommendation did not complete the council process due to an incomplete application.

A board member summarized the rationale in moving the recommendation: "The application is consistent with the downtown strategic plan and will promote economic growth in the DDA district." After the motion was seconded and discussed, members voted in favor and the Chair said the motion carried.

Next steps: the board will forward its recommendation to City Council for final action on the DDA liquor license. The City Council and the state licensing authorities retain final approval authority.
