The Washburn School District board moved through a series of personnel and program approvals Monday and received administrative updates on staffing and programs.
Dr. Weyder reported that the district has "a balanced budget to cover all internal positions for next year" and outlined current openings: a music position with three applicants and an English opening that one speaker said had four applicants (another speaker later said eight). The personnel report also noted two retirements—Rick Seppa and Jim Marsh—and discussed interim coverage plans, including a proposal for Chandra Pingle to split time with the athletic department.
On action items, the board took multiple votes: it approved the consent agenda; appointed Janet Kosniewski as the district representative to the Northern School District Trust; approved the Early College Credit program request for fall 2024 (noted as allowing flexibility should the Northland partner close); approved the second reading of listed policy updates; and approved a school-perceptions contract. The board also approved coaching hires: Hillary Markin as middle-school softball coach, Keegan Culbertson as NESCO soccer head coach and Nolan Malik as NES girls soccer assistant. A maternity-leave accommodation for Caitlin Higgins was also approved.
Votes were conducted by voice "All in favor? Aye." The transcript records that motions were moved and seconded and that the motions passed; detailed roll-call tallies or recorded individual votes were not provided.
Administrators also reviewed student programming: summer school will include classes and food service; the district is arranging transportation and securing the Bayfield Rec Center for summer use. Curriculum council recommended approving summer curriculum through June, with further review for July and the remainder of summer sessions.
Separately, the high-school presenter rebutted rumors after a show-choir bus breakdown, saying the bus stayed with students overnight, was heated and that students "were all safe and taken care of," calling the rumor that students were forced to sleep outside "not true."
The meeting adjourned after completing the action agenda.
