The Johnson County School District #1 board authorized design and bidding for ADA remediation covering Buffalo High School, Buffalo Middle School and KC, moving a phase of work the superintendent said responds to a state accessibility review.
The superintendent told trustees the state’s assessment — conducted about 15 months ago — identified a range of accessibility deficits, and the district’s package addresses door hardware, sinks and plumbing protections, handrails and parking/gradient corrections. “This is one giant step forward to beating those compliance issues with those buildings,” the superintendent said.
Trustees heard project specifics from facilities staff: door closure and hardware testing, restroom fixture protections and handrails, and exterior parking and slope adjustments. The motion presented to the board referenced roughly $534,000 for the bid package before trustees, and members confirmed the work will be sequenced as part of broader major-maintenance planning.
Board members emphasized local contracting and transparency in procurement. One trustee said all three mandatory-walk contractors bid and that local firms will receive work across the program. Trustees also discussed how focusing funds on ADA needs may push other projects later in the district’s capital schedule; the superintendent and facilities director said major-maintenance funds will be reprioritized to address immediate life-safety and compliance items.
The board approved the motion by voice vote. The administration will proceed with the advertised bidding process and return with contract recommendations in a future meeting.
