The Gilroy City Council heard updates on several parks and recreation projects and a pending cost review for the Sharks Ice facility during its March 1 study session.
Council members said the San Ysidro Park upgrade has been under development for several years and has federal or congressional support; one council member described a $3,000,000 appropriation that helped advance the project. Council discussion emphasized community engagement on amenities and some environmental and design checks the city must complete.
Los Alamos Park's planned pickleball courts were discussed as a separately funded project outside the general capital improvement program; councilors said outside funding means the project is moving forward and staff are working on court design, likely including shade structures. "We're going to have shade over them, which definitely makes it more attractive," a council member said.
Council also outlined a potential budget policy change: the city is considering allocating up to 5% of unexplained year-end general fund balances back to parks to create a predictable local funding source for maintenance and upgrades.
On Sharks Ice, the chair said initial cost estimates were higher than expected and asked staff for a deeper review; a staff report and Sharks Ice representatives are scheduled to present to council on Aug. 18 for a public update and questions.
No formal actions were taken at the study session; councilors encouraged continued public engagement as designs and funding details are finalized.
