The Bangor School Board on Monday approved a series of routine and student‑focused items, including a staffing addition for 4K, a district move to a self‑funded dental plan and authorization of an overnight student trip to the Odyssey of the Mind world competition.
The approvals affect classroom capacity, employee benefits and student opportunities. Board members voted unanimously on motions that included a single additional 4K teaching position for the 2024–25 year, acceptance of a $15,000 donation to buy a tire changer and wheel balancer for the new TechEd facility, and authorization for roughly 19 students and four coaches to travel overnight to the world Odyssey of the Mind competition in Ames, Iowa.
Mr. Brockup, who presented the student travel request and several contract items, said the district would contribute roughly $500 toward transportation and that families and fundraising would cover most travel costs. "We're donating $500 of district resources towards that cause and the rest of that will either be fundraised or paid for by the families involved," he said. On the staffing plan, Brockup told the board the district was requesting "just that one certified teaching position" to create a third 4K section and maintain a target 10:1 ratio.
The board also moved the Delta Dental plan to a self‑funded model for 2024–25, keeping employee premiums at current rates. "We're proposing to keep the premiums exactly the same as what they are right now," Speaker 5 said while outlining the recommended change; Speaker 3 then made the motion to adopt the self‑funded plan with monthly premiums set at $36.39 (single) and $113.45 (family).
District leaders presented two contract renewals with cooperating educational service agencies: a CESA 4 (CISA 4) services contract at approximately $163,418 that includes special‑education and related services, and a separate CESA 10 environmental health and safety agreement for $5,127.85. Both contracts were approved.
The board accepted a private donation to cover the $15,073 purchase of a tire changer and Coats balancer from NAPA Auto Parts for the TechEd program; the donor (First National Bank of Bangor) will be recognized with signage. Speaker 7 moved to accept the donation, and the motion carried.
