Rutherford County Schools announces free summer learning camps for K–8 students

Elizabeth Davis, extended learning supervisor for Rutherford County Schools, said the district will hold summer learning camps for elementary students in grades K–5 and middle school students in grades 6–8 from June 2 through June 30.

“These camps are at no cost to our students, and we offer breakfast and lunch daily and bus transportation if needed,” Davis said. She said the camps will be held at eight elementary sites and one middle school site across the district and that current voluntary pre-K students are invited to attend as car riders.

Davis said the YMCA will provide aftercare at six of the sites this year. Each day at camp students will receive instruction in reading and math, participate in STEM activities and take part in daily physical education. “Students that attend camp this year will take home books to build their home libraries and materials to engage them in the month of July,” Davis said.

The district described the camps as an opportunity for students to prepare for the next grade in “a fun and engaging way.” Davis noted that summer camp can serve as a promotion pathway for third graders based on TCAP scores; she said the scores will be returned on May 20 and parents will be contacted if summer enrollment is required for a student.

Summer camp registration is open. Parents and guardians should contact their child’s school for site- and registration-specific information, including exact daily schedules and any closure dates the district observes.
