The Greenville Central School District board used part of its May 13 meeting to recognize student achievements in science and enrichment programs.
Jim Hutchins, a seventh-grade science teacher, introduced winners and honorable mentions from the middle school STEM Expo and thanked volunteer judges (high-school science club members and community volunteers). Hutchins listed many student entries and named winners in first, second and third place and said the displays would remain in the meeting space for attendees to view.
The board also heard from Odyssey of the Mind coach Joe Lopez, who described obstacles the team faced — a snow day and a power outage — and said the students received an OMER Award for sportsmanship and resilience and later placed eighth at the state competition. Lopez introduced coaches and team members.
Students from STEM High and Tech Valley, including Shayla Hentz, Colin Gabler and Grace Miller, described dual-enrollment pathways that let students earn college credits while completing high-school requirements and spoke about how project-based and early-college programs helped them pursue careers (examples: computer science, aviation). Grace Miller described shadowing experiences at an Army base and the Albany International Airport and said she plans to study aviation next year.
Why it matters: public recognition highlights extracurricular and career-focused pathways the district supports and offers parents and the board a direct window into student outcomes from those programs.
The board thanked the students and volunteers and moved on to business items.
