Perrydale SD 21’s board heard a wide-ranging superintendent’s report that celebrated recent student achievements and outlined operational items including a possible website change.
The superintendent told the board that the district ‘‘had a lot of success, with Science Olympiad’’ and that 30 students participated; ‘‘9 of the 15 high school students placed there, and Kellen and Andy Jones got second place,’’ praise the superintendent said, calling it ‘‘quite remarkable.’’ He also noted an online scrapbook entry led by Savannah Beach and that Jonathan Probst won first place at the state convention, with first-place work advancing toward nationals.
Why it matters: For a small district such results represent high student engagement outside core academics and provide visibility for Perrydale students at regional events. Board members repeatedly thanked staff and parents who supported travel and fundraising that reduced student costs.
Board members also discussed last month’s high school trip to Houston, which included visits to the NASA Space Center and Baylor University. The superintendent credited chaperones and parents for handling an on-the-ground issue when a student ‘‘may need to stay behind,’’ saying staff ‘‘were able to assess the situation and come up with a game plan’’ and that a staff member (April) stayed behind to provide support.
The superintendent flagged a separate operational item: the district’s website vendor has been difficult to work with. He said Vanessa, the staff member handling the site, ‘‘talked with quite a few schools’’ and had met with a vendor called Apogee; Apogee’s quote is valid through the 30th if the district signs on. The superintendent described looking at WordPress as an alternative and said the change ‘‘wouldn’t require that action’’ now but wanted to keep the board informed.
The meeting’s elementary and middle-school reports — presented by a staff member — noted a first-ever elementary band/xylophone concert, math and literacy nights, and that 24 students received awards in the Daffodil Festival; funds from the PPC auction will support classroom needs. The staff member said the elementary science adoption team made a final elementary-level recommendation and that middle- and high-school recommendations were ‘‘pretty close’’ to final.
The meeting adjourned after routine announcements about upcoming events and next meeting dates.
