Student representatives and superintendent spotlight service, exams and championship athletes

The Haverford Township School District board heard student reports and celebrated athletic achievements during its January meeting.

Middle-school representative Cora Osborne said January is school-board appreciation month, described winter concerts, thanked crossing guards, and previewed February events including Black History Month activities and counselor appreciation week. High-school representative Beatrice Cox outlined semester exam schedules (noting exam dates and dismissal times), back-to-school night on Feb. 5 at 5:30 p.m., a juniors' meeting on Feb. 18 at 6:30 p.m. about college planning, a SAT school day on April 14 for juniors, and spring sports night on Feb. 19.

Superintendent Doctor Hayes introduced Matt DeCena to recognize two high-school athletic programs: the Haverford cheer program (PIAA District 1 champions) and the boys' soccer team (PIAA District 1 champions). DeCena read a roster of student-athletes and coaches and praised community attendance and program dedication; he noted the boys' soccer team reached the PIAA state playoffs for the first time since 1978 and broke several team records during the season.

Hayes also highlighted MLK Day service activities across the district, including food drives and donations, reminded families of upcoming benchmark assessments for elementary and high-school students, and announced the class of 2026 graduation will be held at Saint Joseph's University on June 4.

Board members thanked the student representatives and celebrated the athletic recognitions during the meeting.
