At the Valley Stream 24 Board meeting, the superintendent and guests presented awards to students and the board approved routine agenda items across personnel, education, finance and policy before returning to executive session.
Friends of Bridge representatives presented the Diana Perrone Memorial essay contest awards focused on why substance abuse negatively affects healthy living. The Friends of Bridge presenter described the organization's local history and introduced winners the board honored. Winners named during the ceremony included Nathan Francois, Devin DeSouz, and Caitlin Moon Munzar; several other students were recognized for their essays.
The board also recognized a Scripps regional spelling bee finalist, Jake Marlborough, and presented Sawa art awards; Miss Barcey called student honorees to the podium. Dr. Caracas used the report to thank teachers and school nurses, noting Teacher Appreciation Week and School Nurses Day in May.
On motions and votes: the board approved the minutes from the April 16 meeting and then approved a slate of agenda items by section: personnel items A1 6A3, education items B1 6B2, finance item C1, and policy item D1. Trustee Meyer moved a reordering of new business (moving item 1 to item 10), which passed, and later moved that the board reenter executive session for personnel and legal matters; that motion was seconded and approved.
The meeting concluded with the superintendent's invitation to stay for refreshments; the public session then recessed back into executive session.
