The Bexley Minority Parent Alliance (BMPA) held its sixth annual “Circle of Excellence” awards ceremony at a Bexley City Schools facility, presenting eight scholarships, multiple community honors and named awards to students, educators and parent groups.
BMPA founder and host Brian Drury opened the program, saying the event exists to recognize students, staff and community members who “sometimes normally don't get recognized.” State Representative Dontavious Jurels, the keynote speaker and assistant minority leader in the Ohio House, told a story about standing up for a homeless woman as a seventh grader to illustrate the importance of service and speaking up for others. “A life of service is about advocating for those who may not have the means to advocate for themselves,” Jurels said.
Why it matters: The ceremony highlighted local efforts to expand recognition and support for minority students and staff in Bexley City Schools and to build community ties between parents, educators and elected officials. Organizers said the awards and scholarships are part of BMPA's work to increase access and visibility for students of color, educators of color and family-led equity initiatives.
Event highlights and awards: The program included musical performances, school presentations and several named honors. Wayne Roberts presented the Thomas Payton citizen award to Hattie Hutchison in recognition of long-term local contributions. Bexley City Schools Superintendent Dr. Fine presented the Kim Rhodes School Staff Award to Montrose Elementary Principal Naisha Clayton, who said she was grateful to lead and learn with Montrose staff. The Bowles Ford alumni award was given to Janine White. Courtney Baker presented a Friend of BMPA award to Melissa Klosterman Landau (MKL), who accepted the honor and described collaborative work to hire diverse staff. A second Friend of BMPA award recognized Erasing Racism in Bexley Schools (ERIBS); a representative, Larry, accepted for the group and invited community members to learn more at eribs.org.
Scholarships and fundraising: Organizers said BMPA awarded eight scholarships this year, with donors and PTO partners helping fund the awards. Ryan Gebhart (Maryland PTO) and Sam Marcelino were among presenters; the event also raised roughly $3,000 from an art auction that funded three art scholarships, organizers said.
Voices from the program: Jurels urged students to use service as a path to change: “Love your community enough to fight for it,” he said. Chief Gary Lewis closed with remarks tying the awards to local history and diversity: “We are more diverse today than we were yesterday,” he said, and encouraged young people to “change the narrative.”
Next steps and community notes: Chief Lewis announced the Bexley AAPI Festival on Friday, May 10 (6–8 p.m.) at the Bexley Public Library parking lot, organized with BMPA and Bexley DEI and supported by the Bexley Community Foundation. The program concluded with another drumming performance and refreshments.
What wasn’t decided: The event was ceremonial and celebratory; no formal votes or policy actions were taken.
