Sunny Isles Beach — Commissioners weighed neighborhood demand for a morning, unscheduled gathering space at the facility known as "the Spot" against logistic constraints and prior commitments to teen programming.
One commissioner said the space is underused in mornings and proposed opening it for residents to meet for coffee, cards and informal gatherings. Staff replied the Spot has limited usable front-space and restrooms; expanding use of the backspace would require fire-sprinkler work and additional restrooms, which staff characterized as cost-prohibitive without a budget allocation.
Commissioners discussed the Spot's prior designation for teens and the need to honor earlier promises to youth programming, including outdoor volleyball and basketball improvements tied to summer camp operations. Staff said the Pelican Community Park work will require use of existing facilities during summer, and the city has directed moving forward on court work; commissioners asked staff to detail what is required to finish outdoor courts and what resources would be needed to open the Spot for broader resident use.
No formal action was taken; commissioners asked staff to provide specifics on staffing, space usage rules, safety upgrades and estimated costs so the commission can consider options before summer programming begins.
