Dr. Monica Saavedra, director of Health and Human Services, described the Community Self Help Fund as "a local lifeline built on compassion and collective action" during the March Hoffman Estates Citizen program.
Saavedra detailed how the fund is supported by local businesses, volunteers and residents and is used for immediate needs. "Whether it's addressing food insecurity, securing safe housing, or offering emergency shelter, the Fund stands ready to help when help is needed most," she said.
She cited examples of recent uses: creating an emergency food pantry in the department lobby, distributing food vouchers to families, purchasing holiday items for children in need, assisting with rental needs after job loss, and funding home repairs such as a ramp for a senior veteran with a disability.
Saavedra also described the fund's role in responding to an April fire that displaced approximately 18 families, providing emergency shelter, clothing, hygiene items, diapers and formula on the same day.
The director urged continued community support through the Hope for Hoffman fundraiser and thanked partner organizations including the Lions Club and local first responders who coordinated relief efforts.
